The meninges

The vasculature, either arterial or venous

The ventricles and/or the quantity or pressure of CSF (CSF circulation)

In other words, any pathophysiology or lesion that leads to an increase in the volume of the contents of the intracranial cavity will cause a mass effect and lead to an increase in ICP. Since the cranial cavity is a closed ‘box’ of fixed size in the adult, the general term often used is a space-occupying lesion, but, as we will see, the term itself may divert one’s thinking away from some intracranial pathology which would not fit under the category of a space-occupying lesion (discussed in the Etiology section). An LP is necessary to measure whether there is or is not an increase in CSF pressure (discussed in detail in Section 9.7.2).
